Children’s Theater of Cincinnati Brings Spongebob to Life Through “Spongebob Musical: Youth Edition.”

Do you and your family enjoy musicals? If so, get ready for a night full of singing and dancing performed by the citizens of the Bikini Bottom.

The Children’s Theater of Cincinnati presents the “SpongeBob Musical: Youth Edition.” Public performances will take place on October 14 and 15, 20-25 this fall at Taft Theater.

“I believe that the Children’s Theater strives to create a safe space for families and children to come and experience the arts,” said Maddie Jones, the show director and co-choreographer.

Although Jones has worked for the Children’s Theater for over a decade, her connection with the theater started long before becoming a staff member.

As a child, Jones’ first memory of being a part of the theater occurred when she was 11. She attended the Children’s Theater summer camp and performed in the holiday classic “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.”

Since then, Jones has always had a passion for musical theater.

‘I can’t believe that little 11-year-old me was a little elf in “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” so long ago. Then to now be the Associate Artistic Director of the Children’s Theater and directing “SpongeBob” has been just an unbelievable experience,” said Jones.

Jones explained that the “SpongeBob Musical” is much more than the typical sponge character going to work and encountering adventure.

According to Jones, the musical touches on tough lessons that families and children need to learn. The show discusses topics such as racism and friendship.

Although important topics are discussed in the production, the musical will still be accompanied with excitement, bright colors and unique costumes.

An entire team is dedicated to designing and constructing the costumes, explained Jones.

Jones and the costume designer, Jeff Shearer, collaborated to discuss what they both envisioned. Even though the musical appeared on Broadway, Shearer and Jones used inspiration from the original animation that we all are quite familiar with.

“We wanted to pay homage to the cartoon,” said Jones.

From costumes to song selections and set construction, the Children’s Theater is dedicated to the behind-the-scenes work of their productions. About 50 people are directly involved in making SpongeBob the musical come to life, plus the entire staff who helped promote the production.

However, with great dedication comes preparation. For each season, the theater selects shows at least two years in advance.
