Manifest Drawing Center Provides a Platform for Local Artists

Whether you’re an artist immersed in the art world for decades or new to the art scene, Artistic Perspectives: A Live Demonstration Series could be a great way to spend your Saturday afternoon.

Artistic Perspectives: A Live Demonstration Series presented by Manifest, a non-profit arts organization, has two more demonstrations that will be held on May 18 and June 1 at the Manifest Drawing Center.

Adam Mysock, the education and studio program manager, and Kevin Leigh-Manuell, the program coordinator, created the live demonstration series to highlight local artists in the same way that national and international artists are highlighted in Manifest’s visiting artist series.

“It’s open to everyone, and it’s a nice way for anyone in the community to come spend a couple of hours and get to know a person in their community who is making such wonderful work,” said Leigh-Manuell.

On May 18, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Oliver Meinerding will showcase digital illustration techniques. He will work with traditional drawing media and use Procreate, a graphics editor app.

“We don’t have a lot of digital drawing[s] happening in our current building. And so, inviting Oliver in to sort of share his expertise with our community is a really meaningful step for us,” said Mysock.

If you’re more interested in learning about the aspects of painting, on June 1 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Emil Robinson will discuss a variety of different topics, such as different approaches when using color and utilizing oils.

For many newer artists, using color can be intimidating because they are trying to figure out how to portray what’s in front of them, says Mysock.

However, it’s not about a one-to-one connection but an awareness of relationships. He explained that this could include thinking about how color changes or how light affects color.

Regardless of someone being an amateur artist or an expert, participants will be able to ask questions throughout the live demonstrations.

From landscapes to figurative work to abstract art, Robinson has over two decades of art experience and knowledge to share with participants.

“To sort of watch him navigate all those realms, it’s really inspiring for me as a trained painter and I hope others, but also to listen to him talk about his thought process is pretty wonderful,” said Mysock.

The structure of the demonstrations will include a more personal setting compared to the typical classroom. Participants will be no more than six feet away from the local artist, offering a unique outlook on their works of art in real-time, explained Mysock.

Can’t attend the live demonstrations on May 18 or June 1? There will be more events to attend this summer, including a three-day workshop from June 21- 23 with Reuben Negron, a contemporary visual artist.
