Rita Dove on Her New Poem Honoring MLK

(Note: This interview was recorded prior to the performance.)

Rita Dove — the first African American Poet Laureate of the United States sat down with WGUC host Megan Lavilla to discuss her new poem, performed by Morris Robinson with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Dove reflects on how she drew inspiration from Dr. King’s quiet strength — the way it helped people feel they could go on, even as challenges grew. She also shares how she reimagined the piece as one of hope, reminding us that no matter where we come from, we are stronger together. That no matter what we have been through, we must keep our spirits.
